Mason Mount has long been touted to be one to look out for and someone who could emulate John Terry and Ruben Loftus-Cheek by becoming a regular member of the Chelsea first-team setup. But, the 20-year-old has spent the last two seasons far from the West London club.

The 2017-18 season saw Chelsea ship Mount bent on Vitesse Arnhem, where he was so impressive that he ended the campaign as the Dutch club’s Player of the Year. His upward trajectory continued the last term, this time closer to home, as he joined Derby County on a season-long loan deal.

Under the tutelage of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, the Englishman turned out forty-four times for the Rams, with a solid come back of eleven goals and six assists, having nearly inspired Derby to clinch promotion, Mount now looks set to finally break into the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard has been appointed as the new Chelsea manager following the departure of Maurizio Sarri. And, it’s been widely rumoured that under the steering of new boss, the Blues are set to blood in more youngsters than ever before, pouncing on the opportunity presented by their transfer ban.

To that end, Chelsea has been working on securing the futures of key youngsters, having already tied Loftus-Cheek to a long-term deal. Callum Hudson-Odoi is also believed to get on their agenda, but the teenage prodigy continues to be heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, there had been reports that Mount was also rumoured to be nearer to the top of the list of candidates who were in line for a renewal. And, Chelsea has now gone on to agree on a new five-year contract with the English midfielder, who expressed his delight at committing his future to his boyhood club.

I joined this club at six years of age and it was always my goal to play for the first team in some unspecified time in the future. I’m looking forward to the approaching season now and working hard to have an impact here at Chelsea.

I have been at the club for a long time now and hopefully, I will stay for a long time to come.”

Having already worked for Frank Lampard, one can expect bright things from Mount, should he be inculcated in the first-team setup at the Bridge.

The 20-year-old has already competed for a part for Chelsea throughout their pre-season campaign and it will now be fascinating to look at if a future with the first-team awaits in the 2019-20 season.
